Amazon Expands Recyclable Packaging Globally

Recyclable Packaging

Amazon continues to make strides toward a greener future in the U.S. and abroad with recyclable packaging. Recently, the retail giant introduced its fully recyclable paper-padded envelope to the UK. This roll-out, which made its debut in the States in 2019, marks a significant step in reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainability across the globe.

Enhancing Packaging Sustainability in the U.S.

Back in the U.S., As one of the world’s largest online retailers, Amazon’s efforts to minimize packaging waste will hopefully have a widespread impact on consumer habits and environmental conservation, reinforcing the benefits of paper-based solutions.

Late last year, Amazon revealed its new Kindle lineup would be using a new packaging design, following recent changes to make device packaging even more recyclable.

In 2023, 90% of the devices launched in the U.S. were boxed in 100% recyclable device packaging. One key change was removing the plastic bags inside and outside the box and replacing them with a water-based coating that keeps the box safe and undamaged. Inside the box, paper-based wraps that protect the device are compatible with paper recycling streams.

The company has also improved how it ships devices to Amazon warehouses because decarbonizing its transportation network is key to meeting The Climate Pledge by 2040. The company has continued to make its device boxing more compact when possible, and it’s focused on using more non-air modes of transportation when shipping products from final assembly to warehouses since science models show that ocean shipping emissions are, on average, 95% lower than air transport emissions.

In December, Amazon announced that device packaging for Echo, Kindle, and Fire TV products were redesigned to improve circularity. The new packaging introduces, on average, 30% more recycled fiber content, reducing the reliance on virgin tree-based and bleached fibers. Across device product lines, Amazon averages 98% wood fiber-based materials in its packaging.

Striking a Balance: Efficiency and Environmental Impact

Since 2015, Amazon has reduced the average per-shipment packaging weight by 43% and avoided more than 3 million metric tonnes of packaging, including nearly half a million metric tonnes in 2023 alone. In 2024, the company removed plastic air pillows from delivery packaging at its global fulfillment centers—avoiding almost 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.

Paper packaging is both recyclable and biodegradable, meaning it breaks down naturally without leaving harmful microplastics in the environment. Plastic, on the other hand, can take hundreds of years to degrade. Most paper products decompose in a matter of weeks or months, effectively reducing landfill waste. Additionally, paper-based solutions are often sourced from sustainably managed forests, making them a renewable resource. As more companies shift toward paper-based packaging, consumers are encouraged to support businesses prioritizing eco-friendly alternatives, further driving demand for sustainable materials in the packaging industry.

North America’s Transition to Paper Packaging

Last June, Amazon announced it had replaced 95% of plastic air pillows from delivery packaging in North America with paper filler and was working toward complete removal by the end of the year. To date, this will be Amazon’s most significant plastic packaging reduction effort in North America, and it will avoid nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually. For Prime Day last July, almost no customer deliveries contained plastic air pillows.

For consumers, the transition to paper packaging means a more straightforward and environmentally friendly disposal process. Paper packaging helps simplify waste management for customers and encourages responsible recycling habits. However, this change could be a double-edged sword for businesses using Amazon’s fulfillment services. On the one hand, it aligns with increasing consumer expectations for eco-friendly practices. On the other hand, some sellers may face challenges adapting to new packaging requirements, particularly if they rely on plastic-based protective materials for their products. Nonetheless, the shift to paper-based solutions opens opportunities for brands to align with sustainability goals and attract environmentally conscious customers.

But is this change enough? Some environmental advocates suggest that Amazon should prioritize reusability alongside recyclability, promoting initiatives such as returnable packaging systems or further reductions in single-use materials.

Eco-Friendly Packaging: A Growing Trend in E-commerce

Amazon’s move to further circularity sets a precedent for the e-commerce industry. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, other retailers will hopefully follow suit, adopting similar eco-friendly packaging solutions. Innovations in biodegradable materials, reusable mailers, and minimal packaging designs will likely shape online shopping sustainability’s future.

In the coming years, the challenge for companies like Amazon will be to continue reducing waste while maintaining efficient and cost-effective packaging. If successful, these efforts could redefine e-commerce logistics, making sustainable paper packaging the industry standard rather than an exception. Businesses can reduce their environmental impact by prioritizing paper-based solutions while still providing customers with a reliable and recyclable packaging option.
