Halloween has gotten expensive, and not just for people: Americans are on track to spend nearly $1 billion on costumes for their pets this year, up from $860 million in 2025. Add candy, pumpkins, decorations and fake blood, and the total gets scary fast.
The good news? You can celebrate Halloween without draining your wallet or filling the landfill with a material that’s both accessible and recyclable—cardboard! In fact, cardboard is so sustainable, researchers now find that cardboard can be recycled more than the oft-repeated “up to 7 times.” Just keep it clean, dry and out of the trash.
Here are 11 cardboard Halloween ideas to build before the 31st.
Decorations
- Creepy Eyes. Cut a pair of horizontal slits in a toilet paper tube and drop a glow stick inside. Voilà: glowing eyes watching from the bushes by your front door.
- Spooky Silhouettes. Trace menacing profiles onto flattened boxes and tape them in your upstairs windows. Your attic now has a very suspicious resident.
- Boarded Windows. Cut cardboard strips the size of planks, paint on some wood grain, and leave the ends jagged. Crisscross them over your windows for that abandoned-house look. They pair perfectly with #2, the silhouettes.
- Caution Signs. Paint a “KEEP OUT” panel, staple it to a stake, and plant it in the lawn. Trespassers have been warned.
Costumes
- Laundry Day. Turn your kid into a washer/dryer combo with a square box, white paint and a few stickers.
- LEGO Brick. Paint a rectangular box red and glue eight upside-down red cups on top in two rows. Cut the armholes close to the top and you’ve got a startlingly convincing brick.
- Rubik’s Cube. Paint a big square box black, then cover each side with nine colored paper squares such as white, green, blue, red, yellow and orange. Mixed it up!
- Up Balloon Basket. Decorate a square box as a wicker basket worn at the waist. Rig a light frame over your head and tether two dozen balloons to it, just like in the movie.
- Robot. Build one big rectangle for the body, four tubes for the arms and legs, four small boxes for hands and feet, and a square head. Hit it all with silver spray paint for a titanium finish.
- Blue Crayon. Roll blue construction paper into a tube you can stand in, add Velcro suspenders, and top it off with a foam cone tucked inside a blue knit cap. It works best as a group, with friends in every color.
- Tipping Boxes. Glue three identical shipping boxes into a tower and leave the fourth unattached on top. Run a bungee cord up the stack. Lurch around until the top box looks ready to topple, then yank the cord to snap it back.
The best part? Strip off the plastic and trimmings, and your cardboard Halloween ideas go straight into the recycling bin on November 1st, though be sure to check with your local recycling program’s rules.
Recycle-Ready Tips
- Paint light. Use water-based paint (tempera, washable kids’ paint or thin acrylic) in thin coats. Skip glitter, metallic finishes and spray varnish.
- Fasten smart. Choose string, clips, brads or paper tape over hot glue, and keep adhesive and tape to a minimum.
- Keep it clean and dry. Food, grease and pumpkin guts contaminate the fiber.
- Skip coated board. Waxed and plastic-coated boxes don’t belong in the cardboard bin.
- Disassemble first. Pull off plastic cups, foam, balloons, bungee cord, Velcro, glow sticks and stickers before recycling.
- Flatten and check local rules. Programs differ on paint and mixed materials, so confirm with yours.
Have a safe & happy Halloween!
