Young People Are Driving the Comeback of Print Books — and Shaping the Future of Reading
In the ongoing debate between print books and e-readers, it turns out that paper is winning—and Gen Z is leading the charge.
Contrary to the belief that today’s young adults are glued to their screens, recent research shows that readers between the ages of 18 and 29 overwhelmingly prefer physical books. According to a Portland State University study on Gen Z and Millennials, print is the preferred format for books. Even more impressive? According to Pew Research, print books remain the most popular format for reading, with 65% of adults saying that they have read a print book in the past year.
The latest Two Sides research supports this as well, and when asked about print preferences, 53% of U.S. consumers prefer to read books in print.
Though digital media surrounds them, young readers are proving that analog isn’t obsolete. In fact, it’s thriving. Many cite the feel of turning pages, the joy of owning a physical copy, and the break from screens as key reasons they choose print over pixels. Whether it’s to reduce eye strain or simply enjoy the unplugged experience, younger generations are showing that a well-loved paperback still has power.
There’s nothing like opening up a real book on the couch or the beach,” said a 23-year-old reader. “They even have a great smell.
Print books aren’t just seen as more comfortable—they’re also more practical. Many young readers say it’s easier to focus with a physical book in hand, away from the distractions of notifications and endless scrolling. One college student shared, “I concentrate better with a print book, especially when I shut my computer off.”
Another major force behind the print boom? TikTok. The #BookTok community has introduced millions of young people to new authors, genres, and titles, often catapulting lesser-known books onto bestseller lists. According to Nielsen, one in four Gen Z readers used BookTok in 2022, helping drive nearly 90 million book purchases—a number that continues to rise. Publishers now watch BookTok as closely as traditional sales data, adjusting their marketing based on the hottest online reads.

Support the Print Revolution—Shop Local
If Gen Z is reminding us of the magic of print, local bookstores are helping to keep that magic alive. Independent bookshops offer more than just great selections—they’re community hubs, discovery zones, and places to fall in love with books all over again.
